Home- Goals for the Year

GT and Algebra 1 Goals
The goal of the GT 8th grade Algebra 1 Math class and 8th grade Algebra 1 Math program is to provide a curriculum that is built around groups of situations that have a common thread in mathematics. The program uses "story" problems, situations to "hook" students, the role of the teacher has changed to that of a facilitator or a guide to the mathematics being presented. Teachers play a critical role for orchestrating the "accountable talk" and in establishing the expectations for discussion in the classroom. The exchange of ideas revolves around the questions that the teacher uses to probe responses from students.
Typically the number of problems presented is fewer than that of a traditional textbook. Since there are fewer problems for students to tackle, students need more time to reason through problems, to build and test their theories, to try multiple solutions, and to make connections.
